heart language

I was over at my neighbour’s house last night and she said something that I hadn’t really realized about her before. To give you some context, she has lived in Thailand her whole life and is probably in her 50s or 60s. What she said was that she could only understand a little bit of Thai and really couldn’t really speak it. Her heart language, or mother tongue, is Thai-yai. Hearing her say that only emphasized for me how significant it is to learn a people group’s heart language. Before, I understood how important this was but her comment has served as a good reminder for me and I hope will spur me on in my language learning.
