Laow was catching cicadas this morning

These days, most kids in my village have been using their summer holidays to catch cicadas. They use a long bamboo pole and add a loop to the end where they place a bag. Laow had been keeping her caught cicadas in her pocket but she asked for a small plastic bag from me. I asked her what she was going to do with them when she caught the cicadas and she said “fry ’em and eat ’em.” Okay. That’s not exactly how she said it but that’s how I’m choosing to translate it.

My cats are also fans of catching cicadas. David and Bowie are fierce hunters, are they not? David catches them to play with, while Bowie is really the one who eats them.

My friend told me the other day that some kids like to catch a cicada and put it in their pocket. When they rub that pocket, the cicada will make the noise that they’re famous for.

On my last trip to Chiang Mai, I actually pulled my truck over to the side of the road several times in one section of the journey because I was hearing a strange noise and I couldn’t figure out what it was. I realized when I stopped that it was cicadas.

If you’re interested, you can hear their noise here.
